Abdominal Emergencies

Patient’s that present with sudden onset of abdominal pain with associated nausea or vomiting may be suffering from an acute abdomen. This is a condition that demands urgent attention and may be caused by infection, inflammation, vascular occlusion, or obstruction.

  • Abdominal sepsis-such as appendicitis or diverticulitis
  • Stomach ulcer complications
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Bowel obstruction due to: adhesions from previous surgery, hernias or cancer.
  • Traumatic injuries

Dr Hannington has extensive experience in Acute Care Surgery and when appropriate will perform most abdominal emergencies by laparoscopic techniques. When necessary an open operation may be the safest or most appropriate approach.
