Hernia Surgery
Dr. Hannington has a special interest and expertise in hernia repair and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. He ran the complex hernia clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital and attended further hernia repair training in Belgium in 2022. He sits on the Executive Committee for the Hernia Interest Group of South Africa (HIGSA) which is integral in hernia education, training, research and development of the latest national guidelines for hernia care.
Laparoscopy
He has considerable experience in laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery which is a minimally invasive surgical technique. This is a surgical technique in which short, narrow tubes are inserted into the abdomen through small (less than one centimetre) incisions. Using long narrow instruments, the surgeon can manipulate, cut, and sew tissue. This has the advantages of less pain, less cutting of skin and tissue, fewer wound complications, quicker post-operative recovery, and shorter duration of hospital stay.
Endoscopy
Dr Hannington has recently gained an interest and skill in endoscopic procedures for weight loss. He has undergone extensive training in Germany in 2023 and performs gastric balloon procedures as well as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.
Holistic Care
Surgical patients frequently present with other linked or impacting conditions. Dr Hannington collaborates extensively with a strong network of colleagues to provide holistic patient care. He also functions closely with the rehabilitation teams at the hospital he works at, to ensure expedited and holistic recovery from surgical conditions.
